14 Days of Love: Day 6

Type: the love that dare not speak its name

Example: Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist of Brokeback Mountain

Morning zoo crew radio disc jockeys rejoiced when Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain provided them with a brand new catchphrase to run into the ground ("I wish I knew how to quit you."), but some of us simply found ourselves moved by a beautiful film about cowboys in love (though I was a tad disappointed by the lack of pudding). The love story of Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist isn't a happy one, in fact, the whole thing is pretty damn depressing, but it is also real and pure and visceral. Sure, it made elderly gentleman who thought they were buying a ticket to see a brand new Western starring that guy from Bubble Boy and not a movie about two cowboys engaging in homosexual sex in a pup-tent extremely uncomfortable. And, OK, so every time Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal shared a tender moment the two young women sitting in front of me giggled. But it was my favorite movie of whatever that year was and it wasn't because Ang Lee was boldly exploring brand new territory or because Anne Hathaway exposed her firm, supple breasts--no, it was because Brokeback Mountain was a beautifully devestating story about two people who were deeply in love but could never be together, and who can't identify with that?

I mean, I can't. I'm happily married to my best friend. But, you know...

Other examples: Tom Collins and Angel (Rent), Ren and Stimpy
