Open your Bible to page 922 and there it is in glorious black and white:
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
God sacrificed his boy to save the world. That is a pretty amazing act of love. And that love is for the whole world: blacks, whites, Christians, Muslims, gays, straights, Democrats, Republicans, the working poor, the filthy rich, and the struggling middle class. Unfortunately God's selfless act of ultimate love has been used by televangelists to bilk senior citizens out of their entire life savings, right-wing nutballs to justify murdering abortion doctors, and activists who believe reinstating prayer in public school (when was it removed from the schools again, I forget?) and teaching creationism as a viable explanation for the origin of our planet is vastly more important than quality teachers and state of the art equipment. Last I looked it said God so loved the world, the whole world, not just the part with hymn-singing, Hell-fearing, holier-than-thou evangelicals in it.
No matter what you believe, the idea of a father sacrificing his only son for the salvation of millions of people is mind-blowing.
